CSU proposes layoffs, 9 percent tuition increase

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Colorado State University is considering laying off 40 employees and raising tuition by 9 percent to deal with a budget shortfall.
Interim CSU President Tony Frank says the proposal would prevent "catastrophic" budget cuts later. Frank announced the potential cuts and tuition hike in an e-mail to the campus Friday after Gov. Bill Ritter signed the state budget.
CSU's budget would be cut by $30 million under the proposed plan. Federal stimulus funds will be used to cover the cuts, but Frank says it won't be enough to make up for cuts the university has already made.
The tuition increase means in-state tuition would go up by $398, and out-of-state tuition would increase by $604.
The university's Board of Governors will decide whether to approve the proposal in June.
