After one of Student Media's most tumultuous years, the CSU department became a private non-profit business called the Rocky Mountain Student Media Corporation on Aug. 1.
The separation from the university, which came after President Larry Penley met in private with Gannett officials on the first day of classes to discuss a possible sale of the Collegian, heralds a more objective operating arrangement with the university for the student-run medias.
The medias include the Collegian, TV station CTV, radio station KCSU and quarterly magazine College Avenue.
Penley's meeting came on the heels of a national media firestorm involving the student paper after the editorial board printed a four-word staff editorial that said "Taser this … F*** BUSH."
The meeting sparked a campus dialogue for a separation of the paper from the university, and in February, the Collegian Advisory Board, which was charged with deciding a course of separation held its first meeting.
Their discussions led to the new model, which was proposed by then Student Media Director Jeff Browne, who will not continue his employment with the news conglomeration.
