Student leaders learned Monday the Athletics Department has withdrawn its two-month late request for student fee increases.

The move comes after two weeks of close scrutiny from student government of the program's spending practices, which have included three expensive head coach buy-outs since spring 2007.

Tony Frank, CSU senior vice provost sent a statement of the withdrawal to the Student Fee Review Board expressing the university's financial frustrations with the department, as Athletics has budgeted nearly $2.5 million more than state funds could provide for, putting the money burden on the university's back.

"… it has now become clear that the $2.4M of additional revenue needed to fund the FY09 Athletics expenses in the face of flat to declining revenues has held up an accurate projection," Frank wrote. "Unfortunately, the anticipated University budget for next year cannot cover this entire amount without cutting into other vital program requests, and academics must remain our highest funding priority."

Frank said the financially starving department would have to survive by avoiding further expenditure increases and attempting to increase fund raising through sales.
