El Centro and the Association for Student Activities program are coming together to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.
The two groups will be hosting a free "Tres Vidas" concert in celebration of Latin American independence and heritage tonight in the Lory Student Center Theatre at 7 p.m.
This concert will salute three historical women of Latin American countries: Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Salvadoran activist Rufina Amaya and Argentinean poet Alfonsina Storni.
"This group sings and acts to celebrate the lives of three significant Latin and South American women," said Shannon Smock, a senior finance major and the concert coordinator for ASAP. "There are the story lines in it that deal with relationships and the hardships, but mainly it's about the paths these women took and what they had to overcome."
Included in the concert are images of Kahlo's art, excerpts from Storni's poetry and pieces from Amaya's testimony regarding the brutal massacre of her village of El Mozote, according to the CORE ensemble's Web site.
Part of El Centro's and ASAP plan was to get students interested in different cultures.
"It is a really good opportunity for students to get to experience different aspects of different cultures," Smock said. "The concert is a way for them to listen to new music that they probable wouldn't have gotten the opportunity for either."
National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to honor the independence of seven Latin and South American countries that celebrate their independence within the dates of Sept. 15-18th.
As part of this celebration, the lives of three influential women of these countries will be honored, and although they vary, they all share stories of perseverance and determination.
Kahlo suffered life altering sicknesses and accidents that only made her stronger as she remained rooted in her art.
Storni is celebrated for her activism for women's rights in Argentina depicted in her poetry.
Amaya's tragic story of living through the massacre of her city as the only survivor creates a moving image of her life.
The "Tres Vidas" concert is free and open to the public, and will start this evening at 7 p.m. in the LSC Theatre.
