It was 45 years ago that a group of students pushed for a student center on campus. It was their efforts that brought to life the Lory Student Center, the student heart of campus.

And from today until Thursday, center officials are celebrating the anniversary of the building's creation.

"The student center has been rated among the top in the nation and it all began because a group of students petitioned for a place they could gather," said Jess Dyrdahl, LSC governing board student employment representative.

The celebration is set to include cake, Wheel of Fortune, popcorn, a student satisfaction survey and more.

"This is an opportunity to reflect on how the Lory Student Center has evolved and changed to meet student needs," said Kris Folsom, LSC marketing director.

Over the past four decades, with the help of the governing board and an annual national student satisfaction survey, the LSC has changed to meet the needs of students, faculty and staff, said George Jackson III, governing board adviser.

About 15,000 students walk through the LSC doors every school day, according to Dyrdahl.

"We have a lot to be proud of," Folsom said.

Jackson, too, said there's plenty to celebrate about.

"It is very important to us to have an annual birthday event. We hope to make it an annual thing."
